The compromise to weigh

The 670g body is considerably heavier than compact 640-class options. Its stadiametric ranging function estimates distance from assumptions about the subject; it should not be presented as a laser rangefinder.

The buying decision

XP50 is the Telos option to examine when you can explain why you want its imaging configuration but do not need an integrated laser. Pulsar specifies a 640 × 480 native detector, 50mm lens and 12.4° horizontal field. The non-LRF format lets you make that imaging decision separately from whether a distance-measurement system belongs in your kit.

The ordinary XP50 and LRF XP50 are an especially clear pair. Compare their listed weights and your expected use of ranging, rather than imagining that the longer model name automatically indicates a better thermal image. This XP50 does include a stadiametric estimate function in its manual. That is not the same measurement method as a laser, and our finder keeps those categories distinct.

A 670g battery-inclusive weight suggests planning the carrying arrangement carefully. Someone who stops to observe for extended periods may accept that burden differently from someone checking briefly throughout a long walk. We have not held or field-tested the device. A demonstration is the right place to assess balance, eyecup fit and how easily the controls can be used with your usual clothing.

The XL50 is the next comparison if your question is native detector resolution rather than ranging. It also changes field width and rated endurance, so compare the full configuration. Choose XP50 only after matching those tradeoffs to an actual observation brief.
