The XL50’s larger detector comes with a shorter runtime rating than XP50. Its 680g weight also makes it a substantial carry choice; extra native pixels should solve a defined observation need.

The buying decision

XL50 is the clearest Telos comparison for a buyer asking about the larger native detector while remaining uninterested in laser distance measurement. Pulsar specifies 1024 × 768 sensor pixels and a 14° horizontal field. That is a different imaging configuration from XP50, not just a larger display number. The distinction matters when deciding which extra capability you are actually paying for.

Compare ordinary XL50 with LRF XL50 before comparing either with another brand. That pair isolates the rangefinder decision more effectively than mixing products with unrelated lenses, detectors and controls. If estimating where activity occurred is enough, a laser may be unnecessary. If repeatable distance readings are central to your observation notes, the LRF version deserves a separate examination.

There is an endurance tradeoff against XP50: the manufacturer rates XL50 for seven hours at 22°C. A buyer taking short sessions may barely notice that difference, while a longer outing may require a different spare-battery plan. Runtime is a manufacturer claim rather than a result from our testing, and enabled recording or wireless functions affect consumption.

The listed weight with battery is 680g. Consider how that fits your intended use before concentrating entirely on sensor resolution. For a premium purchase, seek relevant sample footage and handle the controls if possible.
