The compromise to weigh

Its 640 × 400 internal display is a separate specification from the 640 × 480 thermal detector. Do not infer eyepiece experience from native pixels alone; evaluate footage and a demonstration where possible.

The buying decision

XG30 Compact is a useful answer to a specific constraint: wanting a 640-class native detector without moving to a much heavier body. Pulsar lists 310g with battery, a 14.6° horizontal view and 2× optical magnification. Those specifications explain its place on a compact shortlist. They do not establish that it outperforms every larger monocular in difficult conditions.

The detector, display and recording output need to stay separate in this comparison. The internal display is specified at 640 × 400, while the thermal detector is 640 × 480. A buyer who intends to review exported clips may care about a different part of the workflow from someone who will only use the eyepiece. Neither preference can be settled by choosing the largest resolution number in a listing.

Compare XG30 directly with XQ30 Pro to examine the native-sensor upgrade within a similar carrying format. If you are instead considering Oryx, define the value of the laser rangefinder and dual-battery arrangement before accepting the additional mass. These are different product briefs, and a longer list of functions does not automatically make one more suitable for a walking observer.

Pulsar rates XG30 at seven hours at 22°C and provides removable APS 3 power. For regular use, consider the complete kit you will carry, including a spare if needed.
