The buying decision

The 50-640 makes a deliberate optical trade: a larger lens and a tighter field than ReachIR 35-640. AGM publishes an 8.7° horizontal angle with 3× base magnification. Start here only if focused observation is the brief. If you are still searching for unknown activity across a broad landscape, compare how much terrain the wider version shows before committing to this framing.

Because both ReachIR options use a 640 × 512 native detector, the pair exposes the lens decision more cleanly than two unrelated products. Use the scene-width tool at a distance relevant to your property. The resulting width helps explain search coverage; it cannot demonstrate recognition, image quality or a safe identification distance for any particular subject.

The laser rangefinder is a second function, not a substitute for recognizable thermal detail. Decide whether measured distances help you record observations or revisit locations in daylight. AGM’s thermal detection listing uses ambiguous meters/yards notation, so we have not converted it into a normalized performance claim. A precise-looking number with unclear units would weaken the comparison rather than improve it.

AGM lists this model heavier than the 35-640 and rates all three covered ReachIR variants up to 4.5 hours. Consider carrying support and a suitable charged spare for longer sessions. We have not assessed hand fatigue or tested the image. Seek exact-model footage and check the selected 50-640 Amazon variation once the narrower framing has a clear purpose in your observation routine.
