Daylight use starts with the manual
Thermal imaging does not need darkness to form an image. Its information comes from infrared radiation rather than requiring a dark scene. This makes daytime observation a valid use to evaluate. It does not mean you should aim the objective at the sun or other intense energy sources; read and follow the exact manufacturer’s precautions.
For a first daytime check, choose an ordinary familiar scene from a stationary position. Inspect shapes you can also identify directly, then compare how they appear in the display. The purpose is to learn the relationship between the visual scene and its thermal representation. Avoid choosing a difficult distant subject as the first and only assessment of a new device.
A flat-looking scene has more than one possible explanation
Outdoor conditions affect the differences a thermal device has to display. Sun-warmed surfaces can complicate interpretation, and similar thermal appearances can make shapes less distinct. An unfamiliar palette, focus setting, or image adjustment may also change your impression. Do not decide the sensor is defective from one brief look.
The troubleshooting sequence should be modest: verify focus and eyepiece adjustment as the manual directs, return to a known zoom setting, and follow the specified calibration procedure if needed. Record the conditions before changing many settings at once. A short note about the scene and setup is more useful when contacting support than a general complaint that the image is poor.
Fog and rain change the range question
FLIR explains that atmospheric absorption and scattering can reduce the signal reaching a thermal camera. Fog and rain can substantially shorten useful range, and the effect depends on conditions and the imaging system. Thermal may outperform ordinary vision in some fog, but it is not a guarantee of seeing through any fog bank.
For your shortlist, ask for representative evidence rather than applying a universal percentage reduction to a manufacturer’s range. A simple rule such as half the distance in rain is not a dependable model. The rain intensity, path length, target, background, and device differ from one observation to another. Keep equipment protection separate from picture quality
An enclosure rating concerns equipment protection under specified conditions. It does not guarantee a clear view through precipitation. These are separate rows in a useful shopping comparison. Check the exact manual for permitted exposure, closed-port requirements, maintenance, and operating limits instead of reading a weatherproof adjective as unlimited protection.
The TOPDON TS004 and TS004 Pro both list IP67, yet their detector and lens specifications differ. That shared rating does not make their imaging performance identical. Similarly, comparing two devices on advertised runtime alone tells you little about how a particular damp or cold outing will affect the complete experience. Rated figures should remain clearly labeled.
Build a small evidence sheet
Use a short table for each demonstration or owner clip you examine. Leave missing information blank; it is better to know why a clip cannot answer your question than to manufacture a comparison from it.

If your main reason for buying is a specific difficult condition, seek evidence for that condition before ordering. Paying for a larger detector without resolving the underlying expectation can leave the most expensive item in the kit underused.
