A defined distant observation area
The 12° view covers much less scene than the original Scout Pro’s 32°. At 745g including battery, it also demands more from handheld support and carry planning than compact pocket models.
The buying decision
The Scout Pro III should be chosen for a reason more specific than wanting the top model. Its 12° field of view is the narrowest of the three documented Pro configurations. That can be relevant when you already know where to look and want to concentrate the view on that area. It changes the scanning workload when activity could appear almost anywhere across a broad scene.
The detector remains 640×480, as in the original Pro and Pro II, while the lens and framing change. This is a useful reminder that a thermal upgrade can be optical without increasing native detector resolution. The III uses a manually focused 50mm lens. Consider whether you are comfortable making focus adjustments while holding a longer, heavier device, particularly if observation sessions last more than a few quick checks.
A simple field-width comparison makes the tradeoff concrete. At 100 units of distance, a 12° angle spans about 21 units horizontally; an 18° angle spans about 32. Neither number is a detection or identification promise. They show why a tighter device may require more sweeps to search the same area, even while it provides a different framing of a known location.
FLIR lists 745g including battery, so think about support and carrying position as part of the purchase. The Pro II is a meaningful alternative if you want less weight and a wider view while keeping manual focus. Choose the III only after confirming that your main requirement rewards its tighter framing; a larger advertised distance alone does not establish that it is the right observer for your routine.
